Clean from anywhere with the tap of a button

Background

SharkNinja launched their first ever connected product in 2017. The Shark ION Robot vacuum cleaner required companion mobile apps for Android and iOS, and voice assistant skills on Alexa and Google Home. The apps are to provide users with the ability to control their robot, schedule clean cycles and view cleaning history. I led the UX, UI, and Voice design efforts through an initial MVP launch, then continued maintenance, style updates, and feature additions throughout 2018 and 2019.

Goals

Evolve the Shark ION Robot app look and feel to align with global Shark branding. Incorporate smart mapping functionality into existing application framework.

The design system must be UX-forward, focusing on the key demographic of first-time smart device owners. Conduct user testing to inform feature updates and design paradigms.

Collaborate with hardware and software engineers to ensure a high quality and cohesive brand experience for users.

Full robot control

Whether you’re home or away, you can command your robot to clean, pause, or return to the dock from the Control page. You can also send your robot to clean a specific spot, and adjust the cleaning strength.

Schedule from anywhere

Create custom cleaning schedules for your robot on the Schedule page. You can set a unique cleaning schedule for each day of the week, then let your robot do all the work.

History & alerts

You can view your robot's past 30 days of activity from the History page. Select a day to see a more detailed cleaning report, with tips for getting the most out of your robot.

“Alexa, tell Shark to start cleaning.”

Control your robot with voice commands supported on Amazon Alexa and Google Home devices.

Dark side, light side

The app initially launched with an exclusive dark theme UI. With the launch of two new models, the 2018 update included a switch to a lighter theme.

Custom troubleshooting illustrations

To support a native in-app guide for the robot, I drew 180+ custom illustrations.
